Meditation by the Sea

About the class

If you'd like to know more about the class:

The class is always 90 minutes (1.5 hours) long and consists of:

  • a mantra to tune in

  • warm up exercise(s)

  • a set or kriya

  • relaxation

  • meditation

  • A mantra to tune out

Yoga is a practice, not a performance.  We are not here to prove anything, get anywhere or achieve something.  It is not about how bendy you are, how still you can sit, how long you can meditate, how much you can hold a posture.  It is about you, connecting with you - your body, your mind, your soul - in this moment.  You won't be the same from moment to moment.  What you couldn't do yesterday you might be able to do today, or vice versa.  And that is ok.  It is more than ok. It is being human.  What is important is the attitude you bring to the class, and the commitment to doing your best in that moment.

To support this, we always (unless instructed otherwise in the class) practice with our eyes closed.  This helps you to tune out from the external world, and tune into your inner world.  It helps you to connect and stay connected with you.  Because your eyes are shut - it matters much less what someone else is or isn't doing in the class.  Because - this is your practice, your time with yourself.

The mantras to tune in and out are there to connect us to the ancient masters of kundalini yoga, to their wisdom and protection during our class.  They help to ensure that the teacher passes on the teachings as they were intended to the best of the teacher's ability and opens the student up to receive and practice the yoga to the best of their ability.  Don't worry if you don't know them, it is not a singing competition!

The set or kriya is a series of exercises which can be physical, breathwork, meditative, involve mantras - or a combination of all of them.  The kriya is specifically designed to address a specific area of the body/mind or a particular issue.

In addition to working on a specific issue, the kriya always prepares you for relaxation and meditation.  Relaxation is crucial to the yoga practice, and should not be considered optional.  It's important for enabling you to integrate the postures in the kriya into your body, and to teach you how to relax properly.

The meditation is deepening that connection to yourself.  Meditation is well known for bringing emotional balance, improved sleep, reducing stress, anxiety and depression, better able to handle difficult situations, and improving your focus and concentration.  Meditation is powerful for stimulating your glands especially the pituitary, pineal, hypothalamus and thyroids.  Meditation may be focused on breathwork or mantra, or a combination of these.
